The Royal Air Force is recruiting Medical Support Officers to work with its Medical Services and the wider Defence Medical Services. The starting pay is £35,900+ a year while you complete officer training. After three years of service and promotion to Flight Lieutenant, the pay can rise to £52,800+ plus benefits. In this job, you could work in different parts of healthcare, including Primary or Secondary care. The work can vary depending on where you are needed. It may include helping to manage healthcare services, planning medical support, organising medical supplies for overseas deployments and working on new medical services. You may also help with medical training, medical information systems and the use of AI. To apply, you need to meet the RAF’s education, age, nationality, residency, health and fitness requirements. The RAF also asks for leadership experience, healthcare delivery experience or a relevant degree-level qualification.
The job also comes with training once you join. Officer training is carried out at RAF Cranwell and includes fitness, leadership and other areas needed for life in the RAF. After the initial training, you will receive specialist training related to Medical Support Officer work. This can include areas such as medical planning, medical operations, healthcare logistics and medical information systems. There are also chances to study further during your career, including healthcare-related undergraduate, postgraduate diploma and master’s qualifications. Medical Support Officers can also gain experience that may be useful outside the RAF. This includes healthcare management, medical training, healthcare logistics, emergency services and humanitarian work. The RAF also provides mentoring and further training as you move through the role. The position is a long-term commitment, with officers joining on an Initial Commission of 12 years.
