Biomedical Scientist Jobs with the Royal Air Force could be a good choice if you want to work in a laboratory but also like the idea of doing something different from a normal hospital job. The starting salary is £27,200+ a year, with other benefits included. In this job, you will deal with clinical samples and carry out tests that help doctors find out what is wrong with a patient or check how they are responding to treatment. Your day-to-day work can cover areas such as haematology, clinical chemistry, transfusion science and microbiology, so you can gain experience in different parts of biomedical science. There are two ways to join, depending on your qualifications. If you are already a qualified Biomedical Scientist, you will need to be registered with the HCPC. If you are not qualified yet, you can still apply through the unqualified route if you have the required GCSEs and A-levels, including Biology. You will also be joining the RAF, so the job is not just about working in a laboratory. You will have military training and become part of the service as well.
Before getting into the specialist side of the job, you will complete 10 weeks of Basic Recruit Training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. This is where you will get familiar with military life, fitness and the basics of RAF service. After that, you will move on to your specialist training and continue learning the practical side of biomedical science. For your first tour, you will work with a Joint Hospital Group Unit in an NHS hospital, giving you the chance to work alongside civilian Biomedical Scientists and get hands-on experience in a working healthcare environment. There is also room to keep studying as your career develops, with options such as the IBMS Specialist Diploma, an MSc in Biomedical Science and Chartered Scientist status. On top of the £27,200+ salary, the RAF provides benefits including subsidised food, accommodation and travel, healthcare and access to a free gym. There can also be opportunities to travel as part of RAF life. So, if you are looking for Biomedical Scientist Jobs that combine laboratory work with military training, practical experience and the chance to build your qualifications, this could be an option worth considering.
